We recommend that this study guide course be combined with the 10.5 hour classroom-based course to maximize learning up to 25.5 hours and enhance preparation for a certification exam. The study guide book (print book) is included with course registration.

  • Lymphedema is a vascular disorder that is either due to congenital malformations of the lymphatic system (primary etiology) or related to an insult or injury to the lymphatic system (secondary etiology) such as surgery, trauma, radiation, malignancies, or infections.
  • Secondary lymphedema is more prevalent than primary lymphedema.
  • On a global scale, the leading cause of lymphedema in the world is due to lymphatic filariasis, a parasitic form of lymphedema spread through mosquitoes.
  • Cellulitis is common in patients with lymphedema and may require recurrent hospitalizations.
  • ApositiveStemmer’ssignisasimpleclinicalfindingthatyieldsadefinitivediag- nosis of lymphedema.
  • Lymphoscintigraphy is accurate for detecting abnormalities of the lymphatic sys- tem in the extremities and shows slow or absent lymph flow and areas of reflux (backflow).
  • Complete decongestive therapy (CDT) is considered the standard of care for lymphedema management.
  • Surgery for lymphedema is not curative but may help manage severe cases.
  • Multilayered lymphedema bandaging (MLLB) is composed of multiple layers of short-stretch bandages, along with hygienic lining and padding materials, to cre- ate graduated compression with high containment.
  • All patients need to be transitioned into compression garments for lifelong maintenance management of lymphedema.
  • Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) devices, or lymphedema pumps, may be considered adjunctive to effectively manage lymphedema.

KEY CONCEPTS

  1. Characteristics for identifying malnutrition (undernutrition) include insufficient energy intake, interpretation of weight loss, loss of subcutaneous fat, loss of muscle mass, localized or generalized fluid accumulation, and diminished functional status as measured by hand grip strength.
  2. A comprehensive nutrition assessment always includes an evaluation of current diet and food, fluid, and supplement consumption to determine if an individual’s intake meets his or her estimated needs to prevent skin breakdown and/or support wound healing.
  3. Evidenced-based guidelines indicate that protein and calorie needs are increased in those at risk for, or those with, a pressure ulcer.
  4. Nutrition recommendations for individuals at risk for, or those with, pressure ulcers, must be individualized based on a number of factors including comorbid- ities, food preferences, and socioeconomic status.
