We receive a number of phone calls each week from folks inquiring how to become a Hyperbaric Technician, which is an added qualification to certain baseline credentials.
We have compiled a one-stop list of resources to help you learn what it takes to become a Hyperbaric Technician.
Step 1 = Decide Which Certificate of Added Qualification is Right For You.
Decide if you want to pursue either a Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT) or a Certified Hyperbaric Specialist (CHS). Whichever you choose, be aware that a Hyperberic Technician not an entry-level qualification, rather an additional certification (CAQ) beyond the applicant's qualifying profession (refer to qualifying pathway on the CAQ that you choose).
- If CHT:
- Read "The Path to Become CHT". CLICK HERE to read it now
- Download the NBDHMT's CHT Resource manual, the manual on how to become CHThttp://www.nbdhmt.org/forms/CHT_Resource_Manual.pdf
- If CHS: Visit the ABWH website and read how to become CHS.
Step 1.1 = How to Choose
Trouble deciding which to pursue, either CHT or CHS? Here are a few other notes and considerations to help you decide.
First, if you're already working at a hyperbaric facility, ask the credentialling department which they prefer for you to pursue; they might have certain requirements that you'll need to be aware of.
If you're not yet working at a hyperbaric facility, read through the requirements for each the CHT and the CHS, and make your choice from there. While the requirements for both are smiliar, they are not exactly the same. Once you're informed, make your decision based on which fits your schedule, your life, your professional goals, and your resources the best.
The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS), is the medical society for the subspeciality of Hyperbaric Medicine and is responsible for setting the standards of practice and quality of care; the UHMS recognizes both CHT, CHRN and CHS, CHWS - you can find the UHMS position statement here
Please note that the American Board of Wound Healing (ABWH) offers added qualifications similar to the CHT that is administrated by the NBDHMT. The ABWH offers Certified Hyperbaric Specialist (CHS) and Certified Hyperbaric & Wound Specialist (CHWS) .
Step 2 = Enroll in Basic Training
Enroll in our UHMS-approved, 45-hour basic training in hyperbaric medicine, called Introduction to Hyperbaric Medicine . This is the first step to becoming a hyperbaric technician, either a CHT or CHS.
Step 3 = Begin
Reach out to the organization that offers the credentialling that you decided on, and begin the process.
